The big gap between knowing about ticks and taking steps to stay safe

A new study from the University of Pittsburgh found that people in their area know plenty about ticks, yet many don’t feel all that concerned about Lyme disease.
Researchers surveyed local homeowners to see whether awareness actually leads to prevention. The short answer: not so much.
The study, published in One Health, showed that even though most residents realize ticks are everywhere in the region, many don’t think they’re personally at risk.
As a result, simple steps like using repellent or doing tick checks often get skipped.
The research team says this gap between what people know and what they do is a real challenge for public health. Awareness is high, but action is inconsistent.
With Lyme cases continuing to rise across Pennsylvania, the researchers hope their findings help spark clearer messaging and encourage people to take small, consistent steps to protect themselves.
