Upcoming conferences aim to educate both doctors and families about PANS

For many families, PANS begins with a child who seems to change overnight.
PANS, or Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, is a condition in which a child experiences a sudden and dramatic onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms. These changes are driven by immune activation and inflammation that affect the brain.
Common triggers include infections such as Lyme disease (Borrelia), Bartonella, strep, mycoplasma, and viral illnesses, as well as other inflammatory or environmental stressors.
Children with PANS may develop symptoms such as severe anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, emotional outbursts, rage, tics, sensory sensitivities, sleep disturbances, regression in skills, school decline, changes in eating, urinary issues, and cognitive challenges such as brain fog or difficulty concentrating.
PANS is considered a neuroimmune condition, not a primary psychiatric disorder. Because immune system dysfunction and inflammation can disrupt normal brain signaling, it’s essential to look for underlying triggers rather than only managing symptoms.
Educating and supporting parents
For parents navigating PANS, PANDAS, Lyme disease, autoimmune disorders, seizures, and other complex neuroimmune and neurodevelopmental challenges, access to clear, practical medical education is essential.
That is why the upcoming parent conference sponsored by MAPS—Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs–is such an important opportunity for families.
The organization provides clinical education and training for professionals who care for children with complex neuroimmune and developmental conditions. This year, they are incorporating a session geared to parents and other caregivers into their upcoming physician conference.
MAPS Parent Conference

Families will learn directly from experienced MAPS clinicians who specialize in complex pediatric conditions, including PANS and PANDAS, pediatric Lyme disease and chronic infections, autoimmune conditions, seizures, autism and ADHD, gut health, environmental toxins and mold, and personalized care.
Parents will gain practical tools, clearer language to use with their medical teams, and a deeper understanding of what may be driving their child’s symptoms.
For families who often feel isolated or unsure where to turn next, this conference offers time, explanation, and a community that truly understands.
