A 47-year-old man from New Jersey has died from alpha-gal syndrome, marking the first confirmed fatality linked to the condition.

Alpha-gal syndrome is a severe allergic reaction to red meat and meat-related products. It’s triggered by a sugar molecule transmitted through tick bites, most commonly from the lone star tick.

The man had previously experienced a reaction after eating steak but did not seek medical attention. Weeks later, after consuming a hamburger, he was found unconscious and later died. Blood tests revealed extremely elevated levels of alpha-gal antibodies—20 times higher than any previously recorded in surviving patients.

The case highlights the growing need for awareness of alpha-gal syndrome. A CDC report found that over 40% of doctors were unfamiliar with the condition and many felt unprepared to diagnose it.
