Massachusetts baby hospitalized with suspected Powassan virus

An infant girl from Martha’s Vineyard is in critical condition following what health officials suspect may be tick-borne Powassan virus.
The child, born on June 30, was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital on July 24 after developing a high fever, seizures, and signs of viral encephalitis.
Her family had recently taken her for a walk along a bike path in West Tisbury. Shortly afterward, they noticed a small tick on her ankle.
