Display Instructions
First, buy one or more display boards at your office supply store. The ones I bought had 3 sections – one large and two half-sections. One was black and made of rigid foam. The other was white and made of cardboard and came two to a pack. Both fold up and are light, convenient to carry and small enough to place in the back of your car for transportation.
- Also buy some self-adhesive laminating sheets or transparent envelopes you can insert your printed sheets into (these might hold up even better). The self-adhesive type are slightly larger than an 8 ½ by 11 sheet, leaving the sticky rim extending – just enough to mount your papers (permanently) onto the display board. I messed up only a couple (they wrinkled).
- If you want high quality color reproduction, it pays to invest in some high quality paper as well. It doesn’t cost much and will enhance the colors and minimize bleed.
- Download and print out the graphics you like from the website. Lay them out on the boards to get a pleasing display, then laminate them one at a time according to the directions on the package. Mount each one on the display board in the layout you have decided on, and you’re done.
- Optional: add a few large size photos of your own for local flavor, e.g. kids playing outdoors at the city park, or people hiking up a well-known trail in the area.
- One last detail: I forgot to put a “title” on my display and used a bumper sticker at the last minute. It looks fine and you can order the bumper sticker from CALDA. But I have also created a title page you can use instead. You will probably want to use a paper cutter to cut the excess paper off. I doubled the title so you can have two, if you are making two displays.
If you don’t have a printer, or can’t get good results with the one you do have, you can email the downloaded documents online to an office supply store, and have them print them out for you. They may even laminate them. You don’t even have to pick them up – for an extra charge they will ship them to you. Call your local store for exact details. Whichever way you decide to make your display, you will have a great public education tool that will be useful in a variety of contexts. Make one – better yet, make two or more! Put them up all over town. Let us know how you like these, and if you have any ideas for other displays or educational aides, let us hear from you.
